The horses of Rapa live freely in the mountains surrounding the village. They move around in herds, this is why the tradition of Rapa involves the whole community, from kids to elders.

At the Rapa expedition you will join the locals hiking up to the mountains, where the horses live, and creating the “cordón” that will take the horses down to the village for the Rapa.

*cordón = cord or line made of humans surrounding the horses and making them go on an specific direction without touching them

As wild animals, Sabucedo’s horses do not give away their hair easily nor like to take their medicine. That’s why they introduce them at a closed amphiteatre-like precint, where the “aloitadores” can manage the horses and do their work.

You will be joining the villagers and visitors to watch them move around in groups of three, jumping, pulling and calming the horses as they advance.

*aloitadores = the men and women who perform the cutting of hair and parasites treatment inside the precint.

There is no Galician celebration without food, so expect very local food and drinks at the Rapa expedition. You will join the locals at the “polbo” tents, taste the local wine and sidra, try the traditional empanadas and bocadillos and go for coffee to the local bar where everybody mingles.
